OMG, I Won the Euromillones Spanish Lottery! (SCAM)

I’ve Hit the Jackpot

I’m announcing my retirement – it’s only $715,950 but I think I can stretch that and bum around for a decade. Okay, I’m kidding. The other day I got a piece of mail (direct mail, NOT email) that came from Spain (I’m not sure, but definitely somewhere in Europe). There’s no return address and I thought… that’s weird, I don’t know anyone in Europe.

Forged Letter With Fake Graphics

Euromillones Scam

I open it up and there’s this watermarked letter complete with crappy header logos and an even crappier graphic in the bottom right that’s supposed to be some kind of authentic security seal. These graphics are blurry and just scream fake and unprofessional. So this letter goes on to describe how my name was submitted to an international lottery in Spain through a cross-promotion with some American company and that I won $715,950. They claim that it’s now placed at a security company and I have to call them so they can transfer it to my bank. I’m guessing the first thing they’ll ask for is some money to deposit or some type of transaction fee.

This letter has so many things on it that should set off warning alarms for people but I’m sure people fall for this, just like those Nigerian email scams. I didn’t think they did this with direct mail though. I’m surprised because this cost them “50p” from what I see on the stamp, while sending emails is basically free. If these fraudsters are willing to spend money, it means their endeavors are profitable and people are indeed getting scammed.

Obviously when I get a foreign letter telling me I won a lottery I didn’t participate in, my first reaction is skepticism. I thought “okay, whatever” and the first thing I did was hop on Google and search for “euromillones” and quickly confirmed this is a scam. Apparently they used to do this with email as well (or maybe they still are).

Here’s another page about these fraudulent scams on the official Euromillones website: Scam Letters & Emails

Watch Out For Scams Like This

I’ve added (SCAM) to the post title just to make it really clear. This post was originally meant to be sarcastic but people who’ve received the same letter are finding this post online when looking for info. So just to confirm, the Euromillones letter is a SCAM.

Bottom line is if you actually won the lottery they would not just mail you a plain letter like this to notify you. It would most likely be a phone call or at least a certified letter requiring signature. And they would never ask you for personal financial information or any kind of up front deposit to claim your winnings. Plus, how many lotteries have you played where you had to give out personal information like your home address?

As good as it might sound, if it’s too good to be true, it probably is – money doesn’t just drop out of the sky onto your lap like this.

WOW What a great way to start the new year!!

My girlfriend also received one of these letters just after Christmas.
With her telling me that she got a letter saying she won some money I knew it was a scam.

I have posted an entry about it on my blog, and have got a copy of the letter sent.

Has anyone else noticed that the middle group of numbers in the batch no is their area code?

Maybe we should fax the form back with fake details! lol!

  3. Jim

If you live in the US and get the letter via snail mail, go to the postal service website http://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/forms/MailFraudComplaint.aspx
and file a complaint. . They will investigate based on the number off complaints they receive. At least they have the potential to do something about these crooks.

  13. Jessie

Hey- I just got one in the mail today. I knew it was a scam from the first second I looked at it, the graphics are worse than yours. What I want to know is who the hell are these people, and how are they getting our names and addresses?

  14. @abdul: I doubt you really won, but if you think you actually did, then contact Euromillones.

@Jessie: I have no idea. Neither my letter or the envelope ever had my name which was really the first indication it was fake. Well I guess in today’s world no one’s information is really safe. You ever see those news specials where crooks claim they can get all kinds of information on people? Kind of scary.

  18. rency

I hope someone can put an end to this scam as some people definately fall for it. here I am living in the Caribeban and I receive a letter from SPAIN saying a won the lottery. YEAH RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!! I don’t even play the lottery on my Island. I have a wonderful life here and I intend to keep it that way. Thanks to the internet I was able to do some research to confirm my suspicions. Nice try Euromillions… LOL next time send a letter on quality paper. LOL

  19. Andy S

    Hi folks,
These Lotto scammers are getting better all the time! Now sending their Phish by mail!!!! It actually costs them upfront cash!!!!! The scammers are African for sure, working out of Malaga. Spain.
DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY PERSONAL DETAILS !!! ESPECIALLY BANK DETAILS !!! DO NOT CALL
THE NUMBER THAT THEY ASK YOU TO CALL!!! YOU MAY HAVE A LARGE PHONE BILL TO PAY!!!

If you do want to piss them off and you have got to the point when they phone you! keep them on the phone as long as you can! it will cost them the call as it is from a mobile/cell phone!

Pass on your awareness of these scams. It is the only way to stop them ! Cut out the last man ( the gullable ).
    Good Luck!

the Euromillones Spanish Lottery! —————> SCAM SCAM SCAM … be careful … they will pretend to give you that awesome prize ( it doesn’t exists !!! ) right after you will send them an amount of money…be smart…you really have to play in order to win…right ?! did you? LOL …

anyways, if somebody can track them down, don’t waste any time

sorry for those who have listen to their rubbish

  21. Leonila

I too had received a letter telling me that I won $615,810.00. The letter was from Malaga and the name of the sender is Seaside Security S.A. The claim agent is Morientes Gomez with the tel. no. 0034665137922. I beleive at once when I was reading the letter I even sent my passport. I hope they won’t duplicate my passport. I hope they will do something about this. So that they will stop.

  22. Nikki

I have just received a similar letter from Spain, apparently I have won 985,950 euros – yay! Alarm bells were ringing for me when they could not even spell my name right on the envelope it came in. I have had this sort of thing before by email so knew instantly to check on the net!!! I shall certainly be reporting this as it is not on. There are people our there that do fall for what these criminals send them!

  23. Emma

i just got a letter about an hour ago and new it was a scam it photo coped and the graphic were a mess thankz for confirming my thought :)

  24. Robin

Received my letter today … personally addressed with a stamp (made me curious also) … but the same tosh as written in other comments on this page, and more or less the same layout as in the example above. Remember, if something looks too good to be true, then there is a 99.9999% chance is that it is too good to be true … SCAM SCAM SCAM. Thanks for the warnings.

  25. HAMDAN

i recieved it this evening. man i thought i,m gonna be the luckiest man on earth. but damn it it,s just a bloody
    SCAM.

  26. muchaona

  27. Craig

Hey all you winners out there!
This scam is still doing its thing…even reaching us here in the Western Isles of Scotland!
Oh well, it’s always nice to think you got something for nothing…even if it is (almost) always a dodgy scam!

  28. kamal

My first thought when receiving this letter was “Is this realy true?” I’ll be a millionaire just a split second and my first action was to google “euromillones” and found out that I’m not the only one who has received this letter! I’m lucky I didn’t reply to the letter. Thanks to all who have warn others..

  29. julie kerman

just got my post and suprise suprise i have won a lottery i have never even entered!!!!
remember the old saying “you dont get something for nothing”
did a quick googal search, found this site and others in secounds. how can anyone be so stupid to fall for this. i will pass this letter on to my local police. please if you have or recive one don’t put it in the bin hand it in.

  30. Christine Morel

    Hi All,

i’m from Australia and recieved my letter today from Euromillions. I rang my husband, who rang the lotteries board who confirmed that it was indeed a fraud. i went one step further and rang Spain – Don Manolo Lopez who answered the phone with a sleepy “Ello”. If is was legite he would have give the usual corporate company title. i told hom I knew it was a fraud and hung up!

  31. colin

we are in our 70’s and we recieved a letter saying we had won a large sum of money. like fools we sent off our details to SNR MARK LUIS VIA FAX then phoned him on 0034 658 200 202. he said he was the the client and manager of SANSA SEGURIDAD S. A.
We should of looked on the web first then we would of known it was SCAM we have contacted the police and they are going to look into it

  32. Hi colin,

I recommend that you change all of the information that you sent off if you haven’t already done so – bank account numbers, credit card numbers, etc. The scammers now have your info and they may also sell it so if you don’t change the info you sent, it’ll be circulated forever.

  33. Lisa

I received same letter today here in Ireland!!! KNew immediately it was a scam

  34. Fraser

Got one here, curiously its postmarked 31.03.08 from Malaga so it’s taken a while to get here.

Layout is mostly the same, a few extra pictures etc thrown in. Quite obviously printed on a cheap inkjet printer that needs a new ink cartridge!

Wonder how they got my address? clearly our details are being sold on to shifty characters…

One thing to note, on the back of my envelope is a smear of red stuff… could be blood, lipstick, something else maybe? possibly the result of a scammers paper cut? one can hope.

  35. scammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

we got a similar letter about a week ago and at first we thought we were going to receive 650,000 but we weren’t to sure about sending them money straight way. So we googled this euromilliones thing and we found this site. Thanks for this website we didn’t send any money. I hope someone sews them or turns them in for what they are doing.

  36. Kathy

Well, they don’t give up !!! I received my letter today, and it says the same as everyone else’s. I just hope they don’t catch many people out – Good Luck Colin (Comment 81) – I hope you are able to sort this out before its too late.

  37. Angela Herbert

My mum received this scam yesterday – saying she had won 650,000.00 Euros!

Her agent is Don Pablo and she has to pay 5% of the winnings to Santa Lucia Seguros SA who entered her name in the draw but they will wait to receive their payment after she has her winnings. That’s really kind of them – isnt it?? The graphics are so bad they arent even in focus.

She is already retired and living off pensions so would have been really happy to win this – had she entered the lottery in the first place!

JUST DONT DO IT. If it sounds too good to be true it usually is.

Is there somewhere these letters can be passed on to? Obviously everyone has caught on to the emails scams so they are now trying direct posting which is how my mum was targeted although where they have got the names and addresses from – who knows?

Lets hope its costs them more than they get back then hopefully they will stop sending them out.

  38. Nancy

Hi I too got something similar but in an email. But mine said this:
“All participants were selected through a computer ballot system drawn
from 25,000 names from Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Africa,
North and South America as part of our International promotions program
which we conduct once every year.”

    And it gives this info:
“To begin your lottery claim, please contact your claims agent DR. ALASE
RIBEL the Foreign Service Manager of EUROBELG SECURITY COMPANY On Tel:
    0034 671 972 414 Fax: 0034 911 OI2 464 Email: eurobellg@aim.com
for the processing and remittance of your winning prize money to a
designation of your choice.” (I am hoping me putting the phone numbers and email will help if someone searchs for it)

I think someone should call and say they are able to pick the money up in person, and will be willing to pay the taxes then. Just to see if they will actually try meeting with them. And if they do the Spain police would be meeting them instead ;). But yeah I dont think they will fall for that. And I thought the police could track phone numbers down? Also I think they got my email from my posting on craigslist.org.

  39. jane

They dont give up… I received a letter 2 weeks ago telling me I had won 915810 euros, ignored it and put it in the bucket and today I received another one….so decided to google it…

I wish something could be done as not everyone will realise it IS A SCAM..

  40. dave h

I was sent similer letter which i could not beleive was true . Although i had been on holiday the year before to majorcca , i could not recall purchasing a ticket or anythink of the sort. So just typed it in to see and much to my expectation it was false . These people are desperate low lifes and i hope no one is aken in by this trash…..

  41. Keith M

What a remarkable coincidence. I have won exactly the same amount of money as Jane (comment 84). Anyone know how to scam a scammer? I might even consider giving them their 10% AFTER the mythical winnings had been cleared into my account for at least a year!

  42. jane randall

what a thieving bunch of ******* sending these letters to elderly vunerable people. Something should be done to stop then praying on people..

  43. m. bernhard

They’re now targeting Norway. And guess what – what a coincidence – I’ve also won 615,810,00 euros!

  44. m. bernhard

BTW…all Spanish mobile phones start with 6 and all businesses start with 9.
Guess which number the phone numbers in the letter start with. In Spain you can buy mobiles without having to give your identity details.

  46. Von

My friend recieved before Christmas 2007 & I just recieved it with cell phones from Spain & santcruz@madrid.com. I notice that it doesn’t have a return address just my name & info with a big stamp from there.

  47. Von

I believe spanish ppl work in your favorite bank, lookout!

  48. Be careful

These scams work… they either get stupid people to pay up money upfront… or they obtain so much information on you they can try to steal your identity.

I wouldnt mind it if they looked genuine – then its like bless the little cotton sock scammer… but they are so noticible and why dont these scams ever get stopped or filtered out by our mail system or stamped “lottery scam”?

Your letter you received looked half professional i must say. My one was printed on an old inkjet printer and created in word 97. Nothing was spaced out it looked dreadful. They left one small line for a signature so was signed over to the right over the text. However for a foreign scam the English used was of good grammar and spelling (some sacked banker from England/America probably moved over to Spain) but was really stupid and easily detectible.

I knew it was a scam before i opened the envelope the “EUROMILLONES LOTERIA INTERNATIONAL S.L” text at the top proved this, as only the top half was viewable (i presumed the dot because of the spacing, it could be a space though).

I dont know why the keep interchanging europe and the world/global/international… as euro millions is europe lottery.

I quite fancy my chances of creating a better scam using a professionally printed letterhead and my laser printer, a well laid out document and worded to perfection – obviously because of the moral issues i wont. But if they really wanted to increase the success of this scam they would spend

  49. madar

Is sansa seguridad a serious society of games of euromillions ? I should like to have aa answer because I have send a payment form ; thank you for anyone who reads this e-Mail

The printing on mine is of such poor quality that I’m surprised anyone is hoodwinked – even with my poor eyesight want to puke just from looking at their pixellated graphics!

Out of interest, do they use the same numbers for everyone or do they try to randomise them?
    try these:
