So I’ve Gotten Sick

And it sucks. At first it was just really bad strep throat. It was uncomfortable enough to keep me up at night. I started taking antibiotics and downed a bag of cough drops in about 2 days. The soar throat is gone but now I have a full blown cold - fever, headache, sneezing, runny/stuff nose, coughing, UGH. I have a ton of work to do so it’s completely ruining my mojo.

Google PageRank Updates

So it seems Google recently pushed out a PageRank update and this site is now a PR5. A lot of sub-pages and older posts are also PR4. The site used to be PR4/3 so basically it’s a plus 1 increase - not too shabby since I don’t do any SEO for this site. It’s most likely due to the size of the site (posts) and the age of the site because I have very few inbound links. My business site stayed a PR3 but a lot of content pages picked up PR2 so that’s good. Bad news is my Stuffbox site dropped it’s PR altogether!

US Open 2006 So Far

Hope everyone enjoyed their Labor Day. Lately I’ve been watching a lot of tennis. Agassi’s farewell was so emotional. I’m pretty much rooting for Federer, Roddick, and Blake (in that order). I’m not a front-runner because I root for Federer - I just have a lot of admiration for people who can reach the top, stay there, and dominate the competition like that. It’s not that easy - I remember Pete Sampras saying something like people don’t realize how hard you have to work to stay #1 for prolonged periods of time in tennis. So give Federer credit where it’s due, this guy is amazing.

What Web 2.0 Means For Developers and Entrepreneurs

With all this Web 2.0 hoopla, developers like me are seeing increasing demand for new web design and development projects. Of course this is a good thing, any resurgence in the Internet sector means more sites need to be designed or redesigned. More projects, more revenue. But here’s the thing - many people aren’t even sure what Web 2.0 means. You ask different people and they’ll give you different answers or no answer at all. They hear this buzz word being floated around and they think it’s the next best thing, without really understanding what it means. Some critics say it’s a new mini-bubble. This becomes a big problem when a client or potential client tells me they want a “Web 2.0 design” or a “Web 2.0 site” instead of giving more detailed specs.

How About Them Yankees

Yea. 5-0. :-)

Derek Jeter is CLUTCH. A-Rod is a nimrod.

The Need to “Beat” Everything and Everyone

I don’t know what it is but I’m very competitive, even if I don’t directly show it. Although my web hosting service isn’t exactly live yet, I regularly keep tabs on every direct competitor. I conduct periodic competitive analysis so I can find every gap, every opportunity I can exploit to compete against these incumbent firms. It also helps me track competitive trends (like whether a competitor is stagnant, innovative, up to date, etc.)

Talking to Americans

This is hilarious. Granted, they’re probably only showing the responses they wanted to get but it’s still amazing what Americans will say about things they know nothing about, no matter how ridiculous it sounds.

From the satirical Canadian TV special “Talking to Americans” hosted by Rick Mercer of This Hour Has 22 Minutes fame. Talking to Americans reveals how little Americans know about Canada and the rest of the world by asking regular Americans, university students, professors, celebrities, and even famous politicians questions about their neighbours to the north.

In Part 1, Rick visits New York City, Little Rock Arkansas, Mt. Rushmore, and Columbia University.

I Need a Backup Solution

I’m beginning to realize I definitely need some type of data backup solution. It’s not good that I’ve waited so long to implement something. There is a lot of data and documents on my computer that is really important to me personally and professionally. It would be absolutely devastating if something happened that caused data loss *knock on wood*. There are a bunch of online services offering backup space and “online hard drives” but I don’t trust my private data/documents in someone else’s hands. I’m looking at probably an external hard drive and usb flash drive combination - basically some kind of redundant, 2-tiered backup system.

My Almost GTA Moment

GTA stands for the infamous video game, Grand Theft Auto. Earlier today I was in a supermarket parking lot waiting for a spot, with my signal light blinking. While the original car came out of the spot and drove by me, another car swooped in and stole my spot! I’m refraining from swearing right now about this bi-, I mean woman, but I did start swearing at her. After she got out of the car, seriously, I almost ran her over. If I were less sane, I might have just done it. I let go of the brake and then stopped right behind her as she was walking. The rage. I was waiting there. With my signal light blinking. She had just come into the lot and happened to have the opportunity to steal the spot because the original car coming out was kind of blocking me. I should also note this is a small and very crowded parking lot. So to actually find someone leaving and be there to grab the spot is not easy.

Wow, It Has Been HOT

I don’t think I can stand this heat wave much longer. Oh wait, yes I can, thanks to the AC in my room. Then I read some article about how AC makes people fatter. Don’t know if it’s actually true but I guess it kind of makes sense. If you’re indoors enjoying AC the whole summer, you’re not outside sweating your ass off. No sweat means you’re not burning calories. No burned calories means more fat deposits. Yup, there you go. Anyway, I was outside today to run errands and man the few moments walking from my car to buildings was unbearable. I felt like passing out.
