  • Why is Poor Customer Service So Common?

I’m often amazed at how so many businesses and their customer-facing employees provide such poor customer service. As a web developer/consultant, almost everything I do is about customer service. Deadlines are to be met, work provided should meet/exceed expectations and stated requirements, and basically client needs should be taken care of. I really don’t know why/how businesses out there perpetually provide poor customer service and don’t do anything about it – I just know it’s really frustrating. Here are just some recent examples:

  • MovableType Going Open Source

This is kind of a follow up to the WordPress post I made a couple of days ago. Well recently, MovableType (MT), another blogging/CMS application in direct competition with WordPress, announced a major new version (4.0) that would be completely open source. Note that WordPress is already open source as well. This is a departure in that previously MT was only free for personal use and was limited in terms of number of users per installation. They also had paid commercial licenses and what not. A lot of people are talking about this and MT themselves spew a lot of marketing speak about how they’re doing this to empower bloggers, etc. But I really don’t think that’s the real reason.

  • Lost Season 3 Finale

I’m watching the 2-hour season finale of Lost right now and I just have to say.. OH MY GOD. And it’s not even over. Even though the episode doesn’t answer ANY questions or mysteries about the island, it sure is INTENSE.

Lost just finished Season 3 and all I have to say is:

  • NBA Playoffs 2007 Update

Man, the Spurs v. Suns series is brutal! And Nash seems to be taking the brunt of it. There is definitely a lot of animosity between these two teams. For me, this series has cast a very dark shadow on the Spurs. Bowen is just despicable. What Horry did at the end of Game 4 was completely unnecessary! Now I’m rooting for the Suns to go all the way. I especially want them to win the next game. That would be the sweetest revenge but it’s going to be very difficult with both Stoudemire and Diaw out (unfair suspensions, but rules are rules). I was rooting for Golden State but yesterday’s loss was so disappointing.

  • See’s Gourmet Lollypops Are The Best

Man, I love these suckers. They’re so good! By the way the title is not a mispelling – they call this particular product “Gourmet Lollypops” and I think it ships out of California. I’d definitely recommend everyone giving it a try. There’s 4 different flavors and they’re all decent but I like Butterscotch and Vanilla best (other 2 are Caffe Latte and Chocolate).

  • FBI Admits to Illegal Abuse of Power

So the FBI admits to illegally using it’s expanded power granted by the USA Patriot Act. What a damn surprise. Isn’t this one of the major reasons all the critics of the Patriot Act bring up? There’s no oversight. There’s so much potential for abuse of power. I’m sorry but you can’t simply “trust” these people to follow all the rules. There has to be accountability and oversight. That’s the whole basis our government is formed upon – checks and balances.

  • Sleeping Position

Hi everyone, not much to post about, I’ve been keeping busy. Got this via Digg:
    http://www.flatseats.com/General/positions.htm

    Sleeping Positions

It’s about sleeping positions and what they say about your personality. I don’t know how they can correlate sleeping position with personality and I don’t really believe in this stuff but it’s fun to read. I alternate between between Foetus, Yearner, Freefaller, and Starfish so what does that say? And who the heck sleeps in the “Log” position on top of their arm? It looks awkward and uncomfortable. I sometimes wake up in the Freefaller position except my arm is under the pillow and it’s almost completely numb because I cut off circulation. Trust me, it’s very weird when you wake up and you can’t feel your arm.

  • What the Heck?

Why is every media outlet going on about Anna Nicole Smith’s death? Okay fine she died – I’m sorry but I don’t know this person and from what I do know about her, I don’t get why this is significant news. Is there really nothing more important to report? I didn’t want to blog about it, but when it’s plastered on CNN.com for 2 days and counting and all over TV, it’s pretty annoying. Okay let’s move on to something more important please. NYtimes.com is much more respectable, barely even mentioning it (I believe I saw one link tucked away somewhere yesterday).

  • Broadband Competition is Good!

Okay so where I live, I basically only have 2 options for broadband Internet service – Verizon DSL or Road Runner cable. I’ve obviously opted for the higher speeds and better reliability and switched to RR (resold through Earthlink, slightly cheaper and doesn’t require cable TV service). Verizon FiOS is being deployed in Queens slowly and it’s not available at my home yet (they literally connect fiber to each home). I’ve been itching to switch to FiOS because they give you tremendous bandwidth for around the same price (a bit more). So I was looking up information on when FiOS might be available in my area and was browsing the forums over at broadbandreports.com. That’s where I came upon some interesting news regarding Road Runner.

  • Children of Men

    Children of Men

Children of Men is a great movie – it’s gritty and captivating. It shows a really grim view of the future – the basic premise is that for some unknown reason women become infertile so there are no more babies. The movie starts off with the world mourning the death of the youngest person on the planet (an 18 yr. old). It’s a hopeless, degenerating society and apparently most countries are ravaged by terrorism and chaos. Consequently, the government cracks down hard. Most of the movie takes place in London.
