We’ve recently just had a 90+ heat wave for a week here in NYC and it seems to bring out the bugs. Most notably, house centipedes. Yes I just used my advanced research skills to find that page on Wikipedia.
These things look nasty. I hate them. If you didn’t know, I have a strong aversion to pretty much any insect larger than a big ant. Maybe it’s not the most manly thing to admit but whatever. I hate insects – they make me jumpy. That’s not to say I’m afraid to kill a roach when I see one but I do have some hesitation. In fact, if I see a bug in the house I can’t rest until I kill it or else I get all paranoid about where it might be.
BACK to my point, the hot weather seems to be causing the house centipedes to come crawling out. I’ve already smushed a couple over the last week or so. Yesterday, I saw the biggest one I’ve ever seen. It scared the crap out of me. I was sitting at my computer when in the corner of my eye I see something crawling on the wall (I’m pretty much next to this wall). I turn my head over and it’s this huge house centipede. It was about 2 inches long. Of course I grabbed a napkin and killed it.
From that Wikipedia article I learned that house centipedes actually eat other insects (like spiders, yay) and pests so it’s a shame they have to come out. I can’t exactly just let it go. I know it’s there crawling around so I’d never be able to rest if I just let it go. As long as I don’t see them, they’re out of sight, out of mind.
