Verizon DSL Sucks

At home, for my Internet connection, I use Verizon DSL and I’m pretty unsatisfied with the service. I initially signed up for Verizon DSL last June because my mom wanted to go online. She’s a pretty light Internet user and only visits a handful of websites. So it wasn’t a big deal. But during school breaks when I came home and especially now, I’ve found that Verizon DSL is slow and unreliable.

Slow Speed

For your average user, Verizon DSL is probably enough. But I’m a heavy user. I view a lot of online videos, I download a lot of data, I listen to online streaming radio, and I work over the web a lot. I’ve only been able to max out the connection to maybe 125 KB/s down. Upload speed is a bit less important for me but I don’t recall ever going more than 20-30 KB/s. So this is pretty slow if I’m doing multiple tasks online.

Unreliable Connection

I don’t know what the hell it is but EVERY time the weather outside gets rainy, my DSL connection completely craps out. Even if it’s just cloudy and there are storm clouds. I remember doing a search online about it and found some technical mumbo jumbo. I have friends that say they’ve never experienced this. But I don’t care. If it’s happening for me, it’s all that matters. You know how frustrating it is when you’re online trying to get something done and your connection keeps dying? On a more technical note, the IP address Verizon assigns to you often gets changed when it reconnects, which is a little annoying for other reasons I’m not going into.

Switching to Cable

Fortunately, the one year contract period is almost up and I will be switching to a Road Runner cable connection. This is what I’ve used in my off-campus years up at Cornell and I’ve found RR to be very reliable and fast, even when I’m sharing the connection with roommates. Unfortunately, I do have to put up with this DSL crap for another month. RR costs $30 for the first 6 months and then $45 per month thereafter, as compared to Verizon DSL which is $30 a month. I think the increased cost is worth it considering I do web development work and my Internet connection is essential. I’ve always been supportive of paying more for something if it it makes life easier or more convenient.

Seriously, it’s been rainy lately and I’ve been at the verge of yanking the DSL modem right out and smashing it to pieces. But I’ve resisted. For now.

I’m not sure if I even have to send back the equipment. Maybe I WILL get to smash it. That would be sweet. Sweet indeed.

    Hi Philip,

    Good rant.

    Congratulations! Now a Cornell Grad.

Yeah, DSL with Verizon sucks – I have it at home. Seems as if there are periods when it is slow – but it varies by load in the neighborhood and “other factors”. I have Earthlink DSL in my office in College Point, and it is not reliable – but I don’t do lots of downloads.

Off to Asia for 2 weeks – back on June 21 – luch when I get back?

What happened to the Bxb=k tees?

    Philip ;-)

Stupid sons of bitches piss me off too. It seems every time it rains my connection goes up and down.
Hell, my connection just goes up and down maybe 10 times a day.

Somebody at verizon needs their ass kicked and tooth knocked, then maybe we will get better service.
Their technical support piss me off too.

I am totally in agreement with you. We just moved to a new state into a somewhat rural area. Previously, we had cable broadband and loved it. Unfortunately, that isn’t an option here. So, next best choice, we thought, was Verizon DSL. What a freaking joke!! We signed up for their 3meg service. We are downloading at about 170KBPS!! It took me almost 2 hours to download a 21 minute episode of “The Office” from the Itunes store.

When you call Tech Support, you get sent to India. I find this very objectionable. First off, these are good jobs that should be here in the US. Secondly, I have yet to find them to be of any help at all.

We are going to just give up and try a local WiFi company. It can’t be any worse and at least we won’t have to deal with Verizon. Their own local Field Tech told us that the wires in the area are in terrible shape but Verizon doesn’t want to spend any money because it’s a rural area (about 24,000 residents in the whole county). He said there are wires that Squirrels have chewed through yet Verizon won’t authorize the repair of these lines.

I hope people will revolt againsst this company and hit them where it counts – their Profits.

DSL = dick sucking lesbians (just can not get it right!)

I have the same problem only my problem gets a little more complex. I live in an appartment complex and the phone lines from the building all go to a small green box next to the dumpster (no joke). well someone backed into the little box and it is now exposing all the internal wiring to the elements. Now here is where it gets fun! I do not have verizon for my local ph service. I use a voip company called citynet. Because of this fact i can not get any help w/ this problem. when it rains or even some dew in the morning my net dies (and with it goes my phone). I called verizon dsl tech support to get the problem fixed. well since i don’t really have a NID they can’t fix it only a verizon Phone tech can, and since i don’t have verizon phone they won’t even listen to me. they just tell me there is nothing they can do about the problem. Now i would switch to cable but i got my id stolen by some neighbors some time back and i now owe the local cable company a large ammount of money that i shouldn’t owe. So i’m pretty much hosed!

Mine is not a “life, or job” threatening problem, just a “piss poor” service issue. I only got VDSL because my previous landloard had no cable available. I have since moved, and had my DSL moved, about 3/4 of a mile from a Verizon facility, (if that far). I now have “pretty good” internet speed, until my son starts watching cartoons on his computer, then my computer basically stops, and internet becomes slower than dial-up, or not available. I tried calling Verizon several times, (it would be nice to talk to an American, in this country, and able to understand him, or her – I am not prejudiced, my wife has been in this country for just over 1 year, and, if I depend on Verizon to do my communications, she may never be a citizen), but to have someone who doesn’t read from a card to give advice. I, at my present address, have cable available, and, after having used it for years, have just been trying to get out of a “BS, and non-satisfied” contract with Verizon, get their “sales call only” phone (they sell your number immediately, obviously), removed, but the “foreigner language” sales and support people don’t understand that.

I completely agree with all of you. I STRONGLY recommend getting road runner over dsl. I get knocked off EVERY time a storm comes through. And when I install my verizon dsl, i was almost pulling my HAIR OUT!!! Those f*cking technical support bastards at dsl must have been straight from the mexico-US border cuz I can never make out a damn word there telling me. Not to mention they are NO help AT ALL!!!! I have better luck fixing the problem myself than calling for help!!

  8. Myles

Yeah i have had problems with VDSL.. i just go it yesterday and its barely even getting 100k. I’m a heavy downloader and heavy internet user.

VERIZON DSL is one of the most undepedable items that I have had the displeasure of bring into my life. I am sure that if I had a drunken father with no arms he’d be more useful than verizon dsl. If it rains, if the wind blows, if my neighboor flushes his toilet it goes out. The dsl is only half of the problem. VERIZON has one of the must useless and problematically cyclical “customer service” programs ever put in place. If you do not have 2 to 3 hours to spens on the phone to talk to there flip chart idiots than don’t even bother calling. These people are, to be fair, no qualified to run a beby diaper help desk. I have never been so angry and digusted with a company on in so many ways. I go out of my way to dissuade people from making the mistake with VERIZON dsl. I have taken a chunk out of there business and given it to other companies. If you have read any other commments above and have any questions about verizon let this clarify things. VERIZON never “started” working for me.

  10. Mike

Verizon sucks big time the connection keep disconnected at least 8-10 times within an hour. I cannot stand it any more. The contract will be ended in about 2 weeks. I am living in Fountain Valley California. If anyone want to get DSL in this area stay away from Verizon.

Verizon scam me to sign a one year contract with them. During the first month, they already have so many problem. At first I thought the problem will be fix but it doesn’t. Tech support doesn’t help.

  11. Jim

I’ll pile on by adding Bell South (AT&T) DSL to the crap list! When DSL came out, I marveled at how they, supposedly, figured out how to send very high frequency digital signals over a physical infrastructure originally designed to carry voice frequencies (30-3500Hz). On faith, I believed that a miracle had been done and I signed up for “DSL light” (256Kbps). I actually had pretty reliable connections at that low speed so I upgraded to the “DSL Ultra” service (1.3Mbps).

NOW the ancient voice carrying infrastructure and weak microwave links reveal themselves! When a storm comes through, it drops. The DSL sync and ISP drops off constantly, very likely due to saturation and lack of overload capacity! In the old days, Ma Bell never allowed area codes and exchange numbers to go beyond 60% capacity without adding new numbers and mux-demux infrastructure. Deregulation has nullified that overload capacity and has given us DSL service that can barely keep up. It is but one of the bitter fruits of the “just in time” ethos and brutal efficiency in the service of profits ?ber alles.

As with Verizon, the “tech support” consists of somebody from India or Mexico reading off a screen and doing line tests, which proves nothing. I finally got a real tech support agent and got him to admit that the weaknesses were very likely in the system itself i.e. nodes and microwave links. All the line tests in the world, done from a PC in India, won’t solve the problems!

Bottom line is that the phone company, and the middleman companies like Verizon, is forcing a broadband service over a voice-carrying infrastructure. All the error checking, digital signal grooming, and compensation gimmicks can’t cover it up.

I HAD DSL AT MY OLD LOCATION AND WHEN I MOVED I WENT ONLINE AND DID THIER MOVING OPTION. ALMOST 3 YEARS LATER I STILL DON’T HAVE DSL . I HAVE HAD 4 TECHNICIANS COME TO MY HOME AND SEE MY ORIGIONAL VERIZON DSL MODEM IS CONNECTED AND SHOWING THAT DSL IS AVAILABLE TO ME BUT VERIZON WILL NOT CONNECT IT SAYING THAT I AM TO FAR FROM THE CENTRAL OFFICE. I CALLED THEM AND GAVE THEM THE NAMES AND NUMBERS OF ALL OF MY NEIGHBORS THAT HAVE DSL WITH THEM AND EVEN SOME THAT ARE ALMOST A MILE FROM ME (( EVEN FURTHER FROM THIER CENTRAL OFFICE)) THE TECH THAT I SPOKE TO SAID CAN YOU THROW A ROCK AT THESE HOUSES AND I SAID IT WAS EASIER TO SPIT THAT IT WAS EASIER AND CLOSER LOL. THEY DECIDED TO TRY AND HOOK IT UP AND GAVE ME A CONFIRMATIN NUMBER AND DATE TO INSTALL. BUT ONCE AGAIN VERIZON’S MAIN OFFICE CANCELLED THE ORDER AND NEVER EVEN BOTHERED TO CALL OR EMAIL ME . I THINK THAT VERIZON SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE POOR SERVICE THAT THEY ARE PROVIDING TO PEOPLE. I HAVE LOST 3 JOBS BECAUSE THEY REQUIRE DSL OR CABLE INTERNET AND ALL I CAN GET HERE IS DIAL UP OR SATALITE AND YOU KNOW SATALITE IS WAY TO EXPENSIVE. BTW I AM IN WEST VIRGINIA. I DID READ IN ANOTHER ARTICLE THAT A GUY CALLED TO GET DSL AND HE ACTUALLY SAID HE WANTED ANOTHER PHONE LINE RAN AND HE SAID THAT NOW DAYS WHEN THEY INSTALL A NEW PHONE LINE THAT IT IS THE TYPE THAT DSL CAN RUN ON….. DON’T KNOW IF IT WILL WORK BUT ITS A THOUGHT

  13. SHARON

Well here is another comment about verizon

After years of trying to get your comapny to install my dsl service with no success i was very upset to see in our local paper ((The Tyler Star News)) that our future (( the children of our area)) are doing without the very basics to further thier education. Attached is the actual letter from the paper where a 12th grader from our local high school can’t even apply to colleges because the only internet service for us in this area is dial up. We need to let these children have a chance at a better life that what they have now. I am a parent of 4 girls and 2 will be graduating in the next 2 years and i find it very sadening that they will have less of a chance in attending college for a very simple reason… your company and the lack of providing a simple service ad dsl for tis area. I hope that your company can do something about this ASAP our childrens future is in your hands. This is the actual letter to the editor that is in our paper. Slow Burn

    To whom it may concern:

Hello. My name is Emmalyn Rucker, and I am a senior at Tyler Consolidated High School. Senior year is a special time for students as they develop a sense of what they wish to become in life. Most importantly, students are in the process of determining where they wish to begin this new life by the process of choosing the perfect college. This is the stage in which I currently reside. However, it is made all the more difficult by that fact that colleges now prefer online applications. This puts me in quite the quandary, due to the fact that I have a dial-up internet connection; a dial-up internet connection that is incredibly slow! How are students such as myself supposed to research and apply to colleges when it takes minutes for sites to download? Sometimes it takes so long for sites to download that they simply cannot.

A mile and a half from my home is a Verizon fiber optic closet that connects to my phone line; this closet has been there for three years now! If only Verizon would insert a DSL card, I would be able to get DSL: a convenience that would make internet faster and my college search simpler.

I hope that you will take the time to make my senior year less stressful, and I wish that this same gratitude could be shown for all the student in Tyler County. It is only right that students who live in the country be given the same opportunities as those living in towns and cities.

    Thank you for your time.

    Sincerely,

    Emma Rucker

  15. Hi Sharon,

I can certainly empathize with your situation there. You can also send your story to the guys over at Consumerist.com. They specialize in consumer complaints and can bring a lot of exposure to your situation if they actually post it on the site.

    Hope that helps,

Yes Verizon DSL sucks indeed. It disconnects at least 20 times in an hour at nights (12.00 am to 8 am) if there is still some connection. Sometimes there is no connection for hours. This still happens in day too but it is not that often. This also happened me 6 months ago in summer when there was no rain at all. It was like that for few weeks. I called Verizon. BTW Verizon tec suport is noob. Well after talking 3 hours and doing everything (including reseting the modem) they finally gave me “dead modem” code. So i would call billing department for a new modem. Surprisingly connection got fixed next day, so i did not call them for a new modem. Connection was fine until last month. Meanwhile I found an old PPPOE modem in my junk corner. I have same problem with both modems. I called Tec support dudes again. They said they are gonna send me a dude to check the phone line. I said no thanks. Cuz I know my line is ok and I am not the only one who has this problem. They are gonna tell me same story which i have read in the internet about wet cables, rainy day bull s… I think their pool server(router whatever) which assigns ip’s has problems eventho they don’t admit. So as soon as possible I going to get rid of them.

  18. Tommy

Wow I have the same problems and I’m so glad I found that I’m not the only one getting it. Now I can convince my dad to purchase optimum or something better – actually it doesn’t matter what i get, as long as its not verizno DSL. I mean I put up with getting half the speed that I’m paying for because mainly I use it for gaming. But recently it’s been giving me ups and downs, ridiculous amounts of reconnects. It’s giving me this thing right now I call the ‘5pm warning.’ Everyday around 5pm my internet will start to reconnect, the only pro of this is that when I’m playing CS:S I guess I’ll know that my mom will be home in a couple minutes? Lol. Verizon DSL is a joke. When we first got it, it was slow. Then it moved on to be inconsistent towards the late nights, now its just getting ridiculous, with the 5pm warning AND at late nights, we can barely connect to the internet. I just can’t put up with Verizon at all, they even sent me letters about FiOS being ready, but after I cancel my installation with Optimum and call Verizon, they tell me it’s not ready?! So now I’m going to have to wait another two weeks before I get Optimum installed. Hopefully I get the pleasure of smashing that goddamned modem too.

  19. Josh

Shawn you are right they seem like they come from some 3 world tryin to make a living I hate it I have to ask 3 or 4 times what they said and the DSL is the worse

  20. Verizon Sucks

Yeah Verizon sucks along with Comcast. I’m switching back to dailup so I can at least have a reliable connection again. The DSL goes out at least 10 times an hour for no reason even on bright sunny days. Don’t get my started on how it never works whenever there is a cloud in the sky, not to mention if it starts to rain. Comcast sucks as well with their bit torrent blocking, shared pipes and sub-par speeds when compared to ISDN or Dailup. High speed dailup seems to be the only real solution for me. Maybe I’ll make my own reliable ISP.

  21. Verizon sucks

Verizon not only sucks big time – their customer service is the WORST. I have spoken to various Verizon DSL people for 3 months – each time I call I am on the phone for at LEAST a half an hour first of all. They all want to walk me through the same stupid steps that NEVER get you anywhere. First you are supposed shut off the modem – then put in back on (never does ANYTHING except aggravate me.). There is a “trouble-shooting regium” that they laboriously put you through each time – IN SPITE of the fact that I tell them each time that I’VE DONE THIS BEFORE YOU!!

The problem is simply that I cannot stay connected. Sometimes I am on-line and suddenly it just cuts you off, and you can’t get back on for anywhere from a couple minutes to a couple of hours! Tell me the truth please customer service when I call – tell me you suck and there is NOTHING that can be done about it so I can go elsewhere – I have to be on-line for school – DSL is messing with my life here.

Don’t sign up for Verizon DSL – you will regret it sooner or later.

  22. stynkie

while I agree that verizon isn’t the greatest isp out there, but when you call into verizon’s tech support that means that you obviously can’t fix the issue that you’re going through on your own and you need help! I work for a verizon call center and believe me, you don’t hate call us more than we hate getting your calls. I work in America, on business accounts, if you hate being outsourced so much then switch to static, that is always listed under business reguardless of whether you really are or not, then you can talk to an American (at the very least a canadian), but guess what, we still have to walk you through all of those menial little steps, because we have sups listening in on our phone calls and you have no idea how many times I’ve asked a cx to power cycle only to get a 10 minute rant about how they did that 20 time already and when I finally get them to do it, SUPRISE! their dsl is magically working again. my advise to you is to get a verizon supplied modem, a linksys router, and stfu and do what we ask of you when you call in for our help, if you stick with us through all of the ts and don’t scream at us like it’s our fault and we still can’t get you online we will send you a nice little tech out to fix your problem for you.

  23. Verizon over sold

I have had 4 Verizon techs come out… Problem speeds crap down to 128kb to 200kb after 9pm every night…. the techs that come out don’t work past 7pm….. When they are here my speeds are fine 3mb .Every night now for 3 weeks they die at night… The basic problem is at night when everyone is home Verizon does not have the bandwidth to provide everyone with 3mb.. My neighbors that have DSl have the same issues once the sun sets.. Heck heck out the forum for verizon’s tech help every one has the same complaint speeds crap out at night. http://www.dslreports.com/forum/vzdirect

  24. aneudi

well what can i say i guess it really sucks because im going through the same exact shit

  25. fedup

I dont know about verizon dsl, But I do know about how verizon wont help get the people that live next door to me, to stop montoring and recording my phone calls, I have talked to them for close to a year now and still I can get no help

  26. scott

My dsl connectionis with verizon dsl and it sucks ass too! My cinnectiion at home has ben down four days! They are idiots!

  27. Christopher

Yea. It is snowing right now and the connection has dropped 56 times (i counted). Verizon DSL is s**t!

  28. Adam

I’m a gamer and connection speeds and latency(in game obviously) mean a great deal to me just to name a few games I play World of Warcraft, Halo 3, and Call of Duty 4. Now I have a reason to mention these three games. World of Warcraft is horrible with lag and such from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. then it’s fine to play but not always can I be up to play it at that hour with a job and what not. Halo 3 lags all times of the day no matter what and Call of Duty 4 never has issues which doesn’t make any sense. Verizon DSL needs to get their act together. We got our DSL service over a year ago and my parents are tired of changing it.(i’m 19 by the way live at home and pay rent so don’t think i’m a dead beat no life kid) I live in Vermont in case that matters. If i get the chance i’ll change the service myself.

  29. David Brown

I agere. Verizon DSL does suck! My DSL connection terminates from every few minutes to as long as every 30 minutes. It only drops for a second or two.

I just got off the phone with tech support, and unless they can see it down when they’re looking (which is impossible as it only happens for a few seconds), they won’t even look at it.

I guess I’ll go back to cable :(

  30. Alicia Baldwin

Verizon really sucks! What else can I say, except everyone at Verizon should just kill themselves for being such worthless “members” of society.

  31. Verizon Sucks

I have had it up to HERE with verizon DSL. The connections are not reliable, when you have a connection that is. Speed tests reveal their speeds at anywhere between 5 – 200 kpbs. That’s not a typo – 5 kbps. I am on their 3mb plan so it is very, very frustrating. Calls to tech support are of no help. Plan to spend at least one hour on the phone, half the time trying to understand what they are saying with their heavy accents. I am so angry that I will cancel their service this monday. Heck, I don’t remember dial-up being so unreliable and slow. I think everyone who is frustrated with verizon should cancel their service and hit them where it hurts. Maybe then they’ll do something to fix their crappy product and customer service.

  32. Jon Sparano

I’m DONE ! Too many disco’s due to weather and too many hours spent with morons reading from a script in tech support. They even wanted me to swap the ends of my Ethernet cable ( RJ45 ) for a possible fix.

TWC Roadrunner here I come !

  33. Dan Hutzley

For about two weeks, people have been telling me they send me e-mail and they get notification back that my email account does not exist and if they resend it it goes through. I have been getting e -mail but I have noticed that some of the lists I normally subscribe to are not showing up, The amount of email I normally get has been less than usual. I know I have not received some important email.
On Friday I called Verizon support and the agent told me I do not have an account at Verizon. WE went around and around told him I have had this account with Verizon since 2003 and have received email every day. He said his system has no record of my email account and he can’t help me since I don’t have an account and hung up.

I called and the automated system told me my previous call was resolved. Went through their voice mail hell and finally figure out how to get out of the automatic voice mail loop I was in to talk to another agent. This time some one over the connection was lousy (you think that a phone company would have crystal clear connections for their support staff) . But the guy worked with me and could not solve the problem either but said he thought other non Verizon servers were slow or a bottleneck and causing the problem. I accepted this but I really did not believe him. Just said this to get me off the line.

Today I made up a test , Logged onto my wife’s account at verizon and sent me 18 e-mails. Ten of the emails ended up in my in-box in Outlook. My wife got four e-mails back saying the email was undeliverable because my account did not exist. The other four emails i have no idea where they are. (Some back hole at Verizon) This is a verizon email account to verizon e-mail account. No other servers involved.

I called Verizon support again and got through their voice mail hell to talk to support. The woman took control of the machine and was able to see the e-mail problem and was able to duplicate it using the verizon yahoo email system. But she also said that I did not have an account.
She could not figure out the problem and escalated to network specialist.

The network specialist saw the problem and could recreate it After trying different things he finally said the problem is with Yahoo because they are upgrading their servers and this was what was creating the problem. His supervisor told him this was a known problem and they were working on it and it should be fixed in a couple days.

If this was a known problem why didn’t they broadcast a message to that effect.
Why has it taken them over two weeks to correct the problem
Ever since Yohoo has been managing Verizon’s e-mail the service has gone down hill.

    VERIZON SUCKS BIG TIME.
YAHOO SUCKS EVEN MORE THAN VERIZON

Sorry for the long post but I am so upset with Verizon and Yahoo.

  34. Fabian

well seems like im not the only one with the same problem, my Modem restarts frequently every 10-30 minutes, sometimes even 3minutes. Its very fustrating. Well here is my story.

I use to have Road Runner Back in my old appartment. It ran perfectly fine the modem never disconnected and never gave me problems. They would Always give you a notice on their maintanance when you gave them a call if they had problems in youre local area. Well unfortunatly Verizon does not give you a notice what so ever. I have been calling them since Day 3 Of my service. They have never done anything to fix my problem, other than telling me to restart modem, computer ect. the basic steps. So here is my question. When i call them its like my internet stays online on the duration of the call. When ever i hang up and say my “Thanks” the modem acts up again and there i go again… Calling them back. So i call back the 2nd time and i tell the guy who attended me why was my line being so choppy. He basicly stated “its not youre line, it is probably you Voltage Power w/e on the modem…. So im like “ok.. so its the modem?” So then he gets up and asks another employee and the employee suggested the same thing. So here is what he said. he checked my account status to see if i still had warranty to change my modem. Well i didnt have it anymore…. so guess what i was fucked…. Thanks! to Verizons Tech Suppose they delayed my warranty so now its a bit late to change my modem.. unless i go to the main head office and have them do it. but the guy was not entirely sure if they would take it back.. so that same day i was not in such a good mood. I was raiding a Monster in World of Warcraft an MMORPG video game online. Well guess what i play the role of a Tank which is a warrior that holds the boss from attacking other players and having him focus on you. Well the modem restarts.. as a matter of Fact. my modem just restarted right now =D. anyways.. as i was saying. I got very upset and angry i SNAPPED! i intensually lifted my feet and smashed the modem down and cracked the plaster off. xD so… im very surprise its still working atm. anyways.. so right now im dealing with this stressful modem. i hope soon in the near future i will get rid of this trashy modem and really give it a nice “GTFO my House” invitation. Well this is my story and im out. Thanks for listening.

“Hallo, my name is ????????? thang you veddy so much for callin the verizon online serbisez, how please may I be to assist you” WHAT THE HELL? Trying to understand the tech support is almost as hard as getting the bastards on the phone. I am constantly amused at the recorded helpline suggestion that our issue “could be solved using the online service” If I could get online, I wouldn’t be calling! I have called today 3 times, what do I get every time, “sir if you please would make me happy you to turn off your modem and in 30 seconds, please to turn it back on” I’ve done it 4 times today, look at your screen asshole. I do not believe there really is a service hotline, just a bunch of people(or maybe just 3) slaughtering the english language with only the knowledge to say, “please to turn your modem of for 30 seconds” I can’t wait to grow up and get real high speed.

  39. F.U. Verizon

Claiming Verizon DSL sucks or is crappy is an insult to vacuum cleaners and manures. At least with these two items you can use to clean your home and grow flowers.

The quality of Verizon DSL’s service goes beyond atrocious! I had Verizon DSL for about 1 year and it never worked correctly at the onset. All the filters and other hardware connections were properly installed but the DSL connection always cuts off when an incoming telephone call occurs or if someone tries to make a call from any of the phones in the house. I can be surfing the Internet and B.S. initially because I was locked into a one year contract and the DSL reconnects about 5 – 10 minutes after a disconnection. Lately, the modem can be left on for an entire day and the DSL will not connect. On those rare occassion that it connects, the connection is cut off after half an hour or less.

The only thing worst than Verizon’s DSL is their completely moronic (no) tech support reached from the 800-567-6789 number. I contacted those idiots about the connection problem this Sunday and a field tech was scheduled to come to my house this Tuesday morning to examin the connection problem stated above. After waiting almost an entire day I called customer service when the tech did not show up but only to find out that the ticket to dispatch the tech to my house was closed. After yelling at the Bozo in customer service he informed me Verizon performed a remote diagnostic of my line the day before. I should have received a pre-recorded message that according to their results, everything on my telepone line and connection is in working properly. The joker said it is Verizon’s policy not to send a field tech if the remote diognostic result is O.K…. So nice of Verizon not to inform me after they canceled my ticket.

Well, the connection/cut-off problem is still there. I told Verizon to send a bloody field tech over this week and they confirmed that a new ticket was open to dispatch a tech to come over this Friday. But guess what, I just received a pre-recorded call from Verizon informing me that they had done a remote-diognostic and the results of my line and connection is working properly.

Now, I don’t really give a damn wheather or not the tech shows up. I not going to be home anyway and I’m in the process of having a cable-internet service set up.

P.S. I wish you will publish and share my comment and to as many other parties as possible.

Yes, Verizon DSL does suck–big time. I’ve switched to Comcast permanently. The reason I switched: I have this friend who works as a network specialist for Verizon. And he told me that if I gave him the name an address of anyone within his area he could run a report on their surfing habits and give a copy to me. I didn’t believe him so, I gave him the address of several of my co-workers. Low and behold! The things you can tell about a person from their surfing habits. I learned that one of my co-workers, a woman of 45 is trying to get pregnant by using a sperm bank. Who knew? The way she rejects the guys in the office, we though she was a dyke. She has been doing online searches for sperm banks in the area. She even placed an online ad for sperm donors. Why must they always have a high IQ? Anyway, my boss likes, a man of 65, wears incontinence pads. He orders them wholesale online. I gave my friend at Verizon my neighbors name and address and the couple next door visits all sorts of dirty porn sites at night. Although, it could be just the guy doing it by himself. My neighbor to the right of me, I believe has pancreatic cancer. We can tell because she is constantly searching for treatment articles on the internet. This is one of the main reason I left Verizon. I didn’t want to be spied on. My friend tells me that half of the network specialist are running these reports for their friends and many ares doing it for money. For the record, the policy is Verizon does not engage in this sort of thing. Off they record, maybe not Verizon, but their employees do. The thing of it is, it’s not against the law, though it may be unethical. I’m seriously thinking about getting a surfing report on our pastor. I’ve always believed he was a shady character.

For all of you, like myself, who have major problems with Verizon DSL, be sure to tell their tech support that you want a CREDIT for the days you are without service. If I recall correctly, they’ve already given me approx $10 in credits since June. Not much, but it helps.

I pay 40 dollars a month for the max of 3 mb and lowet of 768 kb connection, the highest I have ever gotten downloading was 90 kb. I have called the verizon reps and everytime they say it is because I have more than one computer hooked up to my modem via router. Which is a load of shit, because when only one computer it turned on it still stays the same. Screw verizon, the only other choice I have is comcast, netzero, and earthlink. Which is my best bet?

  43. Verizon knows their DSL network is deficient in many areas but they won’t openly admit this to you so they provide other excuses. I don’t know about your local area, but Earthlink only resells services from other companies. Like in NYC, Earthlink resells Time Warner Cable’s Road Runner service. So it’s likely Earthlink resells Verizon DSL or Comcast cable in your area. For me, Earthlink was cheaper than RR (even though it’s the same service) so I went with Earthlink.

Netzero is only dialup so I think your choice is between Comcast or Earthlink. If Earthlink resells Comcast, it pretty much just comes down to price. Just note that Comcast throttles P2P traffic and has enabled bandwidth caps. But you’ll probably get much better speed from Comcast cable. The choices (or lack thereof) suck but that is the state of U.S. broadband.

Never let your tech inept roommate make the home telecommunications decisions. Sure, we were both hating Comcast for overpriced services, throttled and capped bandwith, so we were researching other options. Since he is responsible for cable and internet, this dude goes and signs up with Verizon, gets us DSL that is usually slower than the cable we had and disconnects on a routine (like 5 times since I started trying to post this comment!) basis. We have Airport Express stations to extend the wireless signal over our narrow, long apartment, so we are always connected to the network, but diagnostics always point to all the hardware working, so when I walk the length of the apartment to check the wireless modem Verizon gave us, I know the little red “internet” light will be on and I’ll have to reset the thing. Oh, did I mention it was a package deal so we have a landline phone now too that neither of us uses much (cell phones!!), but telemarketers use pretty regularly to try and sell us newspaper subscriptions we don’t want (since we can, you know, read the news online when our INTERNET WORKS!!)

  45. Bryan

Same deal here, but maybe a seemingly exaggerated version as the DSL cuts out every couple of minutes for about 20 seconds, though some days are better. Had similar problems at my previous residence…different service, different state, but the same bs. Been around and around the “customer service.”

Just a completely unreliable service and can’t wait to get back to cable, which worked reliably and much faster.

  46. Edgar

I hate it, for the last 6 months its been a living hell disconnecting every 5 minutes, with the Techs coming out sayin the same stuff, ive called an called but can never get a straight answer…aha the funny thing is when you mention you wanna cancel your service they try everything in the book to make sure it works while your on the phone. im taking my Verizon Modem and im going to shoot it with my 3006, and post it on youtube haha, so be on the look out for that.

  47. Ann

At least I know I’m not alone….the service sucks constantly disconnecting. I work from home and I will be getting Road Runner ASAP. We have quotas that have to be met and with Verizon, forget it.

just wanna comment in defense of the phone tech support, im located off shore as well and i believe that my customers are understanding me, and that goes as well with my co leagues. We are not reading from a script we get trained to do this stuff, we have methods and procedures to follow. We are doing our jobs and believe it or not we care. But there are uncontrolable factors as well, for example your getting a dispatch, the dispatch doent show up, as much as we want to have a tech go there, if we can get our asses in your house to fix the problem why not, but we can only give you information that comes up on our screen, if it shows there why. Regarding the equipment that was sent in your place may it be the cause why your connection is slow or the computer your using, we dont have any access to that, we can only give you the results of the test were doing, again if i can personally go there and show you why you connection is intermittent or why is it slow, why not. Internet connection is really unpredictable a lot of factors may affect your signal, event the ethernet cable, may affect your connection, (pls dont download softwares you are not familiar with, these makes my life hell) phone tech support can only fix the problem wihtin the network, from your computer to the modem to the phonejack, if its outside we cannot support that, if the problems only occurs when its raining we can help you out in escalating it to the correct department, they will be the one to help you, if they were able to help you, pls dont be harsh on us, dont curse us, and burst out your frustation to us, we have feelings as well, dont blame us all the time, make sure first that there are no problem with your computer.

another comment, wheter were from india, mexico, philippines or us, it doesnt matter, all people are created equal, if your from the us doesnt mean that people in india, mexico, philippines and london ( there are other offshore facilities too many to mention) are less. Each individual has his approach, believe me or not its like your lucky if the phone tech you got is focused on his job. And again dont blame us all the time, my goodness, up to now i recieve call with cx using windows 98 worst its 95, it doesnt even support ethernet connection. fif your computer has viruses dont blame us, even your antivirus, its your computer you should be responsible of the actions, dont blame the company all the time.
