Despite the Recession

I’ve actually gotten a lot more work this month. Well, there was a general uptick in work following the end of summer but I was little worried some of my clients would cut back in the face of a recession. And yes, I’m pretty sure we’re in a recession. I’m still worried about how it’ll affect me in a couple months, but we’ll see. Sorry, not much else to post about, I’ve been pretty busy. Have a good weekend!

IE8 Passes Acid2 Test

Many of us web designers/developers never thought we’d witness Internet Explorer pass the Acid2 rendering test but Microsoft announced yesterday via IEBlog that their internal version of IE8 has done just that. Now if they could push this browser out sooner, it’d be great because the sooner IE6 gets ditched, the better.

I Wish Other Web Apps Were Built Like Wordpress

Wordpress really is a very well built piece of software. Wordpress is what I use for this blog. I’m working a new version of this site that will be completely managed using Wordpress as a CMS. Same thing for my business site. That’s how powerful Wordpress is. Development is very active and I love the theme system and the modular system of plugins. Everything just works and it works well. I often find myself wishing other open source projects were built the same way like ecommerce shopping carts or client billing software. Basically something that’s standards-based and is very extensible.

My Beautiful New Monitor and Web Design

Samsung 940Be
I recently purchased a Samsung 940Be which is a 19-inch LCD monitor. Thanks to the falling prices of LCD monitors and Newegg’s low prices, I got a really good deal. I was originally going to wait until the holiday season, but some time in the last couple of months, there was significant price drop. As with all my electronics/computer purchases, I did a lot of research online comparing features and reading reviews. Man, I LOVE this thing. The viewable space is HUGE and it is so BRIGHT. So much more working space, it makes my web development work much easier too.

My Business, It’s Official

Well I’ve finally gotten my business venture officially registered as a New York State LLC so now I’m the owner of my own company. Admittedly, I have no clients yet, but I’m working on it ;-). I’ve been putting off work getting the business launched during the past month for various reasons, but I’m moving along again at full speed. I just spent the entire night (5 hours or so) thinking about and reworking the website to present information about my services differently and also changing some prices.

Website Coming Along

The website for my web services business is really coming along. This is by far the most professional looking site I’ve ever developed. I’ve also made it Firefox and IE cross-browser compatible (the site looks identical in both browsers).

So things are rolling. I even developed a little “wizard” that will ask a prospective customer a few questions and determine which web hosting plan is best for them. This alone took me about 2 days because I had to map out an entire decision tree based on people’s possible answers and then put it into PHP code.
