Waste of Time, Effort, and Money

I find that often with mid-sized businesses on up, there’s a lot of wasted time and lost productivity, mainly due to multiple layers of management and departments. Things like status meetings and conference calls are held to update a bunch of people who add no value and can’t contribue to the process or task at hand. Those very same people don’t understand technical details but insist on being updated on them, even when said details won’t help them in decision-making. I often see excessive micro-management. Or maybe it’s just too much adherence to the status quo and traditional way of doing things in corporate environments. Or maybe it’s just incompetence.

Managing Personal/Business Finances

I pretty much use only 1 credit card for all of my personal expenses and 1 credit card for all of my business expenses. If I can swipe, I’ll swipe instead of using cash. It’s just so much easier to manage especially with online account access and statements. My main card is a rewards card so even though it’s not much, I’m still getting a little bit back. When the monthly billing date comes around, I simply pay the statement off using electronic transfer from my checking account. This makes my personal expenses incredibly easily to manage and lets me import everything into Quicken (I may move to Quickbooks, but Quicken is enough for now).

I Wish I Had $20,000

I wish I had $20,000. Then I could have a good size marketing budget to really jump start my business. But instead I have to slowly bootstrap my way through. Considering this is my first time starting my own official business (not some side project) I’m relatively risk averse. That’s why I don’t want to borrow large amounts of money if there’s a chance I’m not able to pay it back. If I had $20,000 right now I’d spend a quarter of that on promotional activities and the rest to buy up some promising small web hosts out there. There are so many tiny web host owners that for one reason or another cannot continue running the business (not because the business is doing badly). I see these small hosts with good growth opportunities but I have no cash to pony up to acquire them.

My Post-Thanksgiving Review

Well I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. My post is basically an update on what’s been going on lately, it’s a little all over the place.

The Long Trip from Ithaca to NYC
First I have to mention my crappy bus ride from Ithaca. What a LONG ride. The bus left Collegetown at around 6:20 pm and at 7:00 pm we got stuck behind some accident for 2 whole hours. I think this is the 3rd time I’ve gotten stuck behind an accident on trip between Ithaca and NYC - what rotten luck. Then about an hour outside the city, the bus driver stops at a McDonald’s, where half the bus gets off to get food. We’re over 2 hours behind schedule and you’re going to stop and waste more time?! The one good thing is that I ended up in one of the back rows and the bus didn’t fill up so I had 2 seats to myself so I could spread my legs out more comfortably.

Spending Too Much Money

I had a hectic and fun weekend. Friday night, we went to Applebees and I got the unlimited riblets thing. Holy crap, I ate so much I was going to explode. I spent about $20 for dinner there. And then, like we do every weekend, I went over to my friend’s place to drink and play Texas Holdem. My friend makes a delicious drink we started calling “Victoria’s Secret”.
