Nothing Much, Just Another Random Post

So there’s this small commercial area a block from my home, it’s got a few grocery stores, drugstores, and other small shops. There’s this corner store that ever since I could remember, businesses that got set up in that space always went out of business. A long time ago, it used to be this bagel place and that went out of business. Then up until recently, there was this exotic rug/material shop, which also ran out of business. But now there’s construction again and guess what, they’re opening a Dunkin Donuts!

Dunkin Donuts LogoIf you don’t know I love Dunkin Donuts. Everything is delicious and they have great hot/cold coffee drinks, not to mention Baskin Robbins ice cream. So this will be great. There’s actually a Dunkin Donuts about 10-12 minutes walking distance from my house but this is just 1 minute away. When I was at Cornell I kept thinking someone should open a Dunkin Donuts in Collegetown. Ithaca has this thing where they’re very protective of local businesses and so they put up extra road blocks for corporate franchises. So basically this bagel/coffee shop in Collegetown had a monopoly and charged what I think were outrageous prices. Collegetown Bagels, you’re not Starbucks you know.

So anyway, the business is slow going right now. I had a decent first month, but July has slowed down significantly. I think it’s probably due to it being the summer so I’m not picking up a lot of new projects at the moment. In discussions with 3 different people for potential work but those might fall through, I don’t know. Things are a little wishy-washy when you’re discussing them solely through email or instant messaging. Anyway, the address change finally came through so I can set up my business banking account now.

Although, I’m not picking up new work right now, working for yourself definitely has its perks. I got up really early this morning and around 1, I felt really sleepy so I took a nap for an hour. Can YOU do that in your cubicle? I love how I can set my own hours. In the middle of the day if I’ve finished up most of my to-do’s for the day I can sit back and watch an episode of Entourage or something.

EntourageSpeaking of Entourage, is it just me or is the new season not as funny anymore? I actually turned a few friends onto this show. I think I first caught an episode of the first season while I was at home on a school break and thought it was pretty interesting. A lot of people say it’s like Sex in the City for guys. I’ve never watched Sex in the City so I don’t know how accurate the comparison is. “Let’s hug it out, bitch!”

I think a summer slowdown is common in a lot of fields, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it (although that’s easier said than done, I know). You’re right about Entourage kind of losing its edge this season. I haven’t been watching as regularly as I once did. Anyway, good luck with the three potential clients!
