Post-Commencement 05
What can I say, it’s the end of an era. Senior week was definitely memorable. From BBQ’s in the freezing cold to Tom out-drinking Robert to the Gunhill Flood of 05. Then graduation - the congrats and the goodbyes.
There was definitely a lot of drinking during senior week. Southern Comfort, how I love thee. There was definitely lots of Texas holdem. Lots of old school chinese poker. Rob puking, Tom puking. Cornell’s senior week events going all downhill. First, Carnival Night was decent, I actually had some fun. Then Casino Night - I played the wrong game. Instead of duking it out at the poker table, I should’ve played high stakes blackjack and roulette! Some of my buddies easily won a ton of tickets at those games. I couldn’t get any tickets playing Texas. At least Dan won The Incredibles DVD. Then OMG, Comedy Night sucked so bad. Ever heard of 2 guys called Llama Toe? They perform out in the East Village or something. They suck so much, they got booed off the stage. Cornell Night wasn’t much either.
By now, you may still be wondering what the heck is the Gunhill Flood of 05. Basically the apartment complex where I live is called Gunhill Residences. In our apartment, each room has a sprinkler system. Well one of my roommate’s parents (while said roommate was still in NYC) came to clean his room. He happened to have a hanger dangling from a sprinkler (improperly so). His dad took it down, at the same time yanking the sprinkler down, letting forth over a hundred gallons of water per minute (Gunhill staff told us how fast the water moves through the sprinkler). This also set off the fire alarm and thank god the firemen responded so quickly and shut off the water. But the damage was done. The water had flooded and destroyed most of my roommate’s belongings. It had also flooded the entire first floor of our apartment and also 2 floors beneath us. Carpet in all 3 apartments had to be torn out and electrical wiring went to hell. Not to mention, me and Dan were homeless and had to sleep at our friend’s apartment for a few nights (including graduation weekend). I am SO thankful I lived on the 2nd floor - WHEW. So that is the infamous Gunhill Flooding of 05.
Convocation was pretty boring, most of the class officers gave cliched speeches. The guest speaker was Wesley Clark. He seemed more enthusiastic than most of the officers. At one point his speech got a little political though. I did see this girl there and started regreting never talking to her. We used to eye each other back in freshman year at the RPU dining hall but I never did go talk to her. I never saw her much again until this year and then again at convocation. She was looking particularly nice.
Commencement was great. President Lehman’s speech was not. You wouldn’t believe it if I told you but this guy went on and on about Star Wars! Jedi masters, the Force, the Dark Side, Sith Lords, 5 virtues of the Jedi. It was an extremely retarded, dorky, extended metaphor. He also mixed in stuff from some writer named Pinchon (spelling?) and talked about some crap called the Windigo dark side and the Trystero dark side. Here’s an exact quote from his commencement speech - “May the force be with you” - I shit you not! You can’t make this stuff up. Go to the Cornell website and watch the webcast of Commencement. I can totally picture Lehman as a Star Wars geek. But it’s kind of inappropriate for a Commencement speech, don’t you think? If his speech starts getting that retarded at MY commencement next year, I’m going to go ahead with my plan for the launching of 10 beach balls, inspired by Jhony’s smiley face beach ball.
Well anyway, I’ll be home now for about 2 weeks. Every one asks about my summer plans, and as I mentioned before, I am going back to Ithaca to start my own web hosting/services business. Other than that I will be hitting the gym, updating some websites, and working hard to make sure my business is successful.
