Hello, my name is Philip Huang.
This is my personal website which I mainly use to rant about life, business, web design, politics, and other random topics. Sometimes I attempt to be humorous so just play along. Thanks for visiting!
IE6 is Finally Dead
IE6 usage in the US has now officially dropped below 1%! Finally, this horrible browser is dead and web developers everywhere can rejoice in not having to work with this outdated browser. I know some businesses still use it but personally, for my work, I’m dropping support for IE6. Trying to work around its limitations was just headache inducing. Sure it creates more work (in some cases, a LOT more work) that I get paid for, but it’s unfulfilling and frustrating work.
Happy New Year!
Hope everyone has a great new year ahead. One thing I’m curious about – will the world really end this year? Go do the things you want to do and say the things you want to say before it’s all over!
Disfunctional Government
I haven’t really been an observer of our government for that long, maybe 10 years, but I’ve never seen it so bad. It really does appear that nothing can get done unless the Democrats have the White House AND super majorities in both the Senate and the House. When Republicans have majorities, stuff still gets done, because Democrats are willing to compromise. You might just say they’re spineless, but they know that governing requires compromise, especially with a 2 party system. And they don’t blatantly put political ambitions above serving the country. I don’t know how it could get more obvious that right from the get-go, the Republicans sole mission is to deny Obama any kind of accomplishment, to ensure that he fails, even at the severe detriment of the country. They’ve stated this outright on many occasions – their priorities clearly aren’t proper governance but unseating Obama come November. Even if it means the country dips back into recession for many years.
The House Republicans are fucking ridiculous. First they completely oppose any extension of payroll tax cuts and unemployment benefits. There had to be deal/compromise brokered with Republicans in order to get just a 2-month extension through the Senate. All of a sudden the House Republicans refuse anything less than a 1-year extension. HUH?!
People need to realize that the President is not a tyrant. He NEEDS Congress to pass legislation. But we have a bunch of obstructionists in Congress who are only interested in power and not the good of the people.
I Want the Galaxy Nexus
Me want: Galaxy Nexus Review (by The Verge). I’ve been waiting for this phone for quite a while. Believe it or not, I’m still on a basic phone, an old LG Dare.
I’m not really into Apple products so I never went for the iPhone but when Android smartphones started to come out, I felt I didn’t really need a smartphone and I figured I’d wait for the second generation of phones. Later on, I had my eyes set on a Droid 2. But I read about better upcoming phones and 4G LTE so I said okay, let’s wait. Then of course all the new LTE phones had crappy battery life so I thought I’d wait for the next batch of LTE phones with better batter life. (It’s still not much better today but that’s another story).
Rick Perry Fail. LOL. Oops!
This is absolutely hilarious and cringeworthy at the same time. So embarrassing!
Dude, good luck running for.. uh.. uh.. what was it.. uh.. oh yeah! PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.
Photoshop Deblurring
Another late work night. But this awesome thing popped up in my RSS reader – it’s a sneak peak at functionality being developed by Adobe that basically deblurs an image and enhances it. Now if you work with images at all, you know that you can’t really restore visual details that don’t exist. That’s why it’s stupid when in TV shows and movies they take some obscure, super-blurry image and then enlarge and incredibly enhance it. Because that just isn’t possible.
But this is a step towards that:
Stupid Computer Problems
Wow what a mess. Since Monday afternoon, I’ve been struggling to fix problems with my computer. At a time when I’m woefully behind on work to the point of pissing off some clients – I’ve wasted 3 and a half days trying to fix my computer. And today I finally, FINALLY found the cause of the problems. Nerd story below.. if it helps out 1 person I’ll be happy.
Summer Doldrums
Except it’s not. I’m busy as freaking heck right now and have been for the last 2 months. I wish there were more hours in the day and I had gotten more sleep this weekend, so I wouldn’t be so tired right now. I’m behind schedule on a lot of work and feeling a little burned out. I’ll probably take some time off at the end of the month or sometime next month.
So my electricity bill was through the roof this past month but this humidity is just unbearable. Right now, there’s thunder snapping like crazy, like really loud, enough to startle you. You’d think there was a wicked thunderstorm but there’s not one drop of rain and I can’t see the lightning because it’s sunny. What the heck is that about. I’m tired..
NBC Coverage of French Open 2011
As is tradition every year I and hordes of tennis fans out there complain like crazy about NBC’s horrible coverage of the Men’s semifinal matches at the French Open. There now appears to be an improvement this year.
NBC is allowing the Tennis Channel to carry the first semifinal (Nadal vs Murray) live, in its entirety. That match starts at 8am EDT. Then, from 11am to 2pm EDT, NBC will carry the 2nd semifinal (Federer vs Djokovic), also live in its entirety, but only on the East coast. Unfortunately, in the West Coast, it’s still going to be on tape-delay.
BUT! This year NBC will livestream the Federer vs Djokovic match at NBCsports.com in its entirety as well so you can still watch the whole match live. It may not be on your TV, but it’s better than nothing. And certainly much better than in years past (2008 / 2009).
